State Veterinarian Dr. Richard Wilkes has lifted the quarantine on a Thoroughbred training facility in Fauquier County.
Officials with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) quarantined the premises after a horse that was relocated to Martin County, Fla. on Feb. 22 developed clinical signs consistent with Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) and was confirmed with Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1).
Since the quarantine was put in place, all exposed horses at the Fauquier facility were monitored twice daily for fever and other clinical signs.
“I have lifted the quarantine effective today,” Wilkes was quoted as saying in a press release, “but I do urge all horse owners to monitor their animals regularly for signs of disease and to observe strict biosecurity as a matter of practice.”
