September is Bicyclist and Pedestrian Awareness Month in Virginia and, as fall temperatures lure more people outside for recreation, the Prince William County Police Department encourages County residents to share the road.
The Department reminds residents that safety on County roadways depends on mutual respect. Bicyclists, motorists, and pedestrians all have rights and responsibilities while using roads. It’s important to See and Be Seen.
In 2015, 78 pedestrians and 15 bicyclists were killed on Virginia roadways. Those deaths comprised 12.4 percent of all fatalities on the state’s roads, according to the DMV Virginia Highway Safety Office. In that same period, 661 bicyclists and 1,718 pedestrians were injured.
Prince William County Police remind residents to determine what they can do to better protect themselves and others – whether they are behind the wheel, riding a bicycle, or are on foot.
