Senator Mark Warner will host his annual Virginia Service Academy Day on Saturday, April 27th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville. The event will offer students, parents, and school counselors a comprehensive overview of the United States service academies and their admission processes.
Attendees will have an opportunity to meet with officials from the five federal service academies, as well as representatives from ROTC programs, Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, Virginia Military Institute, Mary Baldwin University Corps of Cadets, and Randolph Macon Academy.
The Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and Naval Academy require a two-tier admission process of highly qualified individuals; an applicant must meet the rigorous admissions requirements of an academy, as well as receive a Congressional nomination to be accepted into an academy.
Registration for Academy Day is at https://academyday2019.eventbrite.com.
From Sen. Warner’s web site: Each United States Senator and United States Representative may have no more than five people attending each service academy at any given time. Most members of Congress allocate at least one open vacancy each year. For each vacancy, ten nominations may be submitted to the respective service academy admissions office. Offers of appointment are made by the admissions office on a competitive basis measuring the overall qualifications and eligibility of all nominees.
The application for a nomination from my office will be available on April 29, 2019 and can be found here. The deadline for submitting completed applications for the class entering the summer of 2020 is Friday, September 27th at 5 PM in my Norfolk office. Please make sure to read all the instructions and verify that you have completed and submitted the online form as well as mailed all required additional materials (including ACT/SAT test scores), and that they are received by my office before the application deadline. Postmarks are not sufficient.
Service academy applicants are eligible for nomination by both United States Senators in the state of their legal residence and the United States Representative for the District in which they reside as well as the Vice President. Applicants should apply for nomination to all four nominating sources.
Information on the nomination process for the service academies is available on the Senator’s website at http://www.warner.senate.gov You m.ay call the Roanoke office at 540-857-2676 with any questions about the event.
