Russell Harrison is candidate for Manassas City Treasurer

Russell Harrison, a Manassas Volunteer of the Year for 2015, has announced he is a candidate for Manassas City Treasurer on Nov. 8.

The current City Treasurer, Robin Perkins, who has served in the position since 1998, is retiring.

Harrison served on the Manassas Electoral Board for six years and the Manassas Planning Commission for three years.

While on the Planning Commission, he served on the Zoning Ordinance Review Committee (ZORC), where he helped complete a comprehensive review and rewrite of the city’s entire zoning ordinance.  This work earned Harrison and his fellow Commissioners Bruce Wood and Ken Johnson recognition as Manassas’ Volunteers of the Year in 2015.

He resigned from the Electoral Board in May to run for Treasurer.  A Republican, Harrison was twice elected chair of the Electoral Board by the other two Board members, both Democrats, reflecting his commitment to honest bipartisan problem solving.

During his time on the Electoral Board, Harrison said he created an unpaid internship program in the Registrar’s office with George Mason University and worked to ensure that voting was fair and accessible, including outreach efforts to many underserved communities within the City.

“Manassas has a well-earned reputation for fair, honest, and transparent elections. I am proud to have played a role in building this reputation, and am honored to have had a chance to lead the dedicated citizens who work to make sure democracy is safe and strong in Manassas,”  he was quoted as saying in his announcement.

Professionally, Harrison notes 20 years of experience working for nonprofit organizations, including the last 13 representing technology professionals with the IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional society.  There he oversees a staff of five professionals, coordinates public policy initiatives with 30 other professionals around the world, directly controls a $7 million budget, and serves as a senior staff member for a global $450 million institution.

Harrison has a Master’s degree in Public Management from the University of Maryland, and is a certified Planning Commissioner (Virginia Tech) and Association Executive (ASAE).

“Robin has set the bar very high for our next Treasurer.” Harrison was quoted as saying in the press release.  “She has done a fantastic job serving the people of Manassas, and set an example that I plan to follow,” he added. He said that Perkins has endorsed him to replace her.
