On the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landing in 2019, I traveled to Normandy with a bipartisan delegation to honor these heroes. There, I thanked Virginia Veterans who landed on the beaches in 1944. I also listened as they shared memories of their fallen brothers in arms — those resting under nearby white crosses.
And throughout our visit, I witnessed the tremendous gratitude of America’s allies for liberating a continent, defeating fascism, and building a more peaceful and prosperous world. Our friends have never forgotten these sacrifices, and neither should we.
The 80th anniversary of D-Day reminds us of a fundamental truth — that the United States of America has for generations been a beacon of hope for millions living under tyranny. As undemocratic forces continue to strengthen around the world, we have an obligation to those who came before to stand strong in the face of autocracy, vigorously defend American values, and reassert our role as a global leader.
Today and every day, I encourage all Virginians to remember our neighbors who gave everything on behalf of their fellow Americans.
