PWCS welcomes 650 new teachers

Some 650 teachers joined Prince William County Schools’ ranks for the 2011-12 school year. Some just graduated from college, others have taught for years elsewhere and still others have had careers in other professions but are joining the ranks of the teachers in the county.

These 650 teachers, who were chosen from among 43,000 applicants, according to a school statement, spent three days getting acclimated to the county’s school system and learning what they need to know before school starts on Sept. 6.

The county newcomers learned about Steven Walts’ vision of creating a world-class school division. Walts is starting his seventh year as superintendent.

The new teachers will join professional learning communities, filled with people who believe all children can learn, and who make sure no students are underserved.
