PWCS students inspire audience at MLK Day community celebration

With passion, poise, and presence, six finalists in the 28th Annual Youth Oratorical Contest wowed the audience at the Cecil D. Hylton Memorial Chapel on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The students delivered their interpretation of the program theme, “In his own words: yesterday, today, and tomorrow.”

Middle school winners were: Jennine Faruque, an eighth-grader from Stonewall Middle School for “Best Before the Audience,” and Syed Sarin, a seventh-grader from Porter Traditional School, for “Best Before the Judges.” From Gainesville Middle School, Angela Ngono Noumedem was also a finalist.

Patriot High School’s Zoree Jones was the high school winner. Zion Fozo was a finalist representing Potomac High School.

Winners of an essay contest for elementary students held in conjunction with the oratorical contest are:

Fourth-Grade Winners
First Place, Jorai Collins, T. Clay Wood Elementary School;
Second Place, Julienne Lim, Porter Traditional School; and
Third Place, Zareef Said, Buckland Mills Elementary School

Fifth-Grade Winners:
First Place, David Calvente, Tyler Elementary School;
Second Place, Kathy Guo, Mountain View Elementary; and
Third Place, Claire Ruiz, The Nokesville School

This annual event is sponsored by the Prince William Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Cecil & Irene Hylton Foundation and the Delta Research and Education Foundation.
