People from across the county will have their first opportunity to discover and enjoy the new Prince William County Public Schools Aquatics Center at a free grand opening celebration, Saturday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The center will provide PWCS students and other community residents with an introduction to life-saving swimming and water safety skills, along with a wealth of educational, fitness, competitive, and recreational opportunities.
The grand opening will feature a sampling of all the facility has to offer. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m., allowing visitors to prepare for a day of free recreational swimming and to experience the giant slide that will help to draw regular paying recreational visitors.
Throughout the morning, there will be demonstrations of regular and pre-school swimming lessons and safety classes, water aerobics, swim team activities, scuba diving, and more. Activities will take place in both the center’s competitive and leisure pools.
“This is a great chance for everyone to see the fantastic new asset available to the students and community of Prince William County Public Schools,” says Aquatics Manager Allen Dunn. “
The best part of all of this is that kids who may never have had it before will get the opportunity to learn to swim and be safe in the water. Sooner or later, that will save someone’s life.”
Information about public water safety programs and lessons will be available at the grand opening. Pilot courses through school-day visits to the center will begin this year for second-graders in several elementary schools.
Following the grand opening, the aquatics center will be open for public use on weekends, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Monday-Friday, from 6 to 10 a.m., and 4 to 9 p.m.
The Monday through Friday afternoon/evening hours will start two hours later, at 6 p.m., beginning in November and through the end of the high school swim team season. Nine PWCS high school teams will be using the competitive pool for daily practices.
Public use of the center will be available through daily, periodic, or annual passes that range in cost from $5 daily pass for youth or senior to $273 (youth/senior) $819 (family) for a 12 month membership.
Memberships will be available at the grand opening. Opening day activities will also feature face painting, paper boat racing, craft tables, food, and family activities.
