Eighteen Prince William County public schools have been redesignated “Schools of Excellence n the Division’s annual school awards program, according to a statement issued Jan. 18 by Dr. Steven L. Walts, Superintendent of Schools.
The four Bull Run area schools in the 18 cited are Mountain View, Nokesville and Gravely elementary schools and Pennington traditional school. The six Old Bridge area schools in the 18 recognized are Antietam, Lake Ridge, Old Bridge, Rockledge, Springwoods and Westridge elementary schools.
Also recognized were Bel Air, Dumfries, Henderson, Kerrydale, Leesylvania, Marshall and Rose Parks elementary schools and Porter traditional school. No high schools are middle schools made the list.
Schools that attain the “Excellence” designation must demonstrate high levels of performance. Each must be fully accredited by the state, make Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Act and achieve an overall score of 90 out of 100 points on PWCS Strategic Plan-based measures. Selection is based on performance in the 2010–11 school year.
Awards will be celebrated at school sites in the near future. The celebrations will recognize the contributions of the entire school community in achieving the School of Excellence designation. As in the past, schools earning this honor receive commemorative flags and plaques at their school-based celebrations.
