Prince William Little Theatre to poke fun at musical theater five ways

Prince William Little Theatre’s production of The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), opens July 18 for six performances, through July 27, at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on the Manassas campus of George Mason University.

It’s one thing to lampoon Broadway’s greatest musicals, it’s quite another to satirize them with such zest and imagination, you wind up creating another great musical in the process. The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!) is exactly that kind of show, one that aims to make fun of musical theater ... only to prove the genre’s greatness beyond any doubt.

The show takes a simple plot—“I can’t pay the rent!”—and spins it five different times, each in the style of a genius composer or composing team, including Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Kander & Ebb and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The result is a quintet of brilliant tributes to Broadway’s best, packed with zingers, witty references and truly great songs.

Susy Moorstein directs a fresh production of this Drama Desk-nominated off-Broadway hit for Prince William Little Theatre.

The production team includes Matthew Scarborough as music director, Caroline Simpson as choreographer, and Don Petersen as stage manager.  The cast includes Ivy Elizabeth Cole (Abby), Larry Keeling (Jitter), Katie Puschel (June), Stephen Kutzleb (Will), Tina Mullins, Karen Rice, Rebecca Scarborough, Caroline Simpson, Chrissy Mastrangelo, Eric Anderson, Don Wilson, Alex Gordon, and Dan Bellotte.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., July 18, 19, 25 and 26, with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. on July 20 and 27.  The Hylton Performing Arts Center is located at 10960 George Mason Circle, in Manassas, Virginia.  Tickets for this event are $25 (adults), $20 (seniors, students, and active military), $15 (children 12 and under).

Prince William Little Theatre, a volunteer community organization, has been bringing quality entertainment to northern Virginia since 1985.  Auditions for their fall production The 39 Steps, will be held in early August.

PWLT is a member of the Prince William County Arts Council, NVTA (formerly the Northern Virginia Theatre Alliance), and WATCH (the Washington Area Theatre Community Honors).
