Congress voted on Friday, April 28, to pass a short-term spending bill through May 5 to prevent a government shutdown this weekend, according to the office of U.S. Senator Mark Warner (D-VA).
“Negotiations involving congressional Republicans and Democrats to wrap together 12 unfinished spending bills into a single piece of legislation have progressed relatively smoothly after the White House dropped threats to withhold payments that help lower-income families pay their medical bills, Warner’s press release said.
It also helped considerably that President Trump dropped his demand for funding for a border wall. Negotiators also chose to ignore $18 billion in unpopular spending cuts submitted by the White House, according to Sen. Warner.
