October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

The Civilian Corps of the U.S. Army Medical Command (MEDCOM) at Fort Sam Houson, TX has recognized October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) with dedicated efforts to encourage employment in the federal workforce for individuals with disabilities.

With increased recruitment, hiring and retention, the Civilian Corps continues to support the Department of Defense’s goals and objectives for disability employment. National Disability Employment Awareness Month helps educate the public about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. This year’s theme is “Expect. Employ. Empower.”

Dr. Joseph Harrison Jr., chief of civilian human resources at the command, was quoted as saying in a press release, “We encourage individuals with disabilities to explore the various career opportunities and exceptional benefits with the Civilian Corps,. Our recruitment efforts will continue to support disability employment and ultimately lead to the hiring of qualified individuals to serve our military counterpart.”

The Civilian Corps utilizes the Federal Government’s Schedule A Excepted Service hiring authority for persons with disabilities and increases participation of individuals with disabilities in internships, fellowships and training and mentoring programs.

Civilians, roughly 45,000, make up approximately 60 percent of the total Army Medicine workforce providing the day-to-day care for Army Soldiers, beneficiaries and their families at Army hospitals and clinics worldwide.
