NOVEC offices are accepting food donations for Operation Turkey

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative is collecting non-perishable food for Operation Turkey until Nov.15, to help provide Thanksgiving meals for unemployed and low-income people in Prince William County.

NOVEC’s non-profit volunteers group, Hands Engaged in Local Public Service, HELPS, will accept non-perishable food donations at the Co-op offices in Manassas, Gainesville and Woodbridge. The SERVE campus of Northern Virginia Family Service, along with Action in Community Through Service, will distribute the food to people who need assistance. Anyone requiring a receipt must drop donated items at either the SERVE or ACTS location.

Lori Spence, NOVEC HELPS president, says, “The Pilgrims and Native Americans in Massachusetts shared their bounty in 1621—just a year after many family members had died of starvation. We continue thanking and sharing today; it’s just what Americans do. Food that NOVEC customers donate to Operation Turkey will help make Thanksgiving a joyful day for many low-income people in our community.”

Suggested food Items include mixes for breads, biscuit and muffins; stuffing; instant mashed potatoes; rice; gravy; pasta; cranberry sauce and other canned fruit; canned vegetables; boxed desserts; sugar; flour; evaporated milk; pastry pie crusts; and pie filling.
