NOVEC and other agencies ready for Irene

The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative employees (NOVEC) and other agencies are readying for Hurricane Irene.

Expected to hit the Prince William area hardest early Sunday morning, Aug. 28, Irene’s winds and rains may cause power outages and cause other safety concerns.

The Virginia Department of Transportation was readying to keep the roads safe, particularly in areas where high waters are likely to cause hazardous road conditions.

Priscilla Knight, NOVEC spokeswoman, said her organization is continually focused on keeping power on for its more than 146,000 customers in Prince William, Fairfax, Loudoun, Stafford and Clarke counties. The cooperative monitors 660,000 miles of power lines.

Customers who experience outages can call 1-888-335-0500. NOVEC is online: http://www.novec.com .

A full story on NOVEC and how it handles emergencies will be in an upcoming issue of the Observer news.
