NoVA NORML to hold meeting in Manassas on Sept. 4

Northern Virginia (NoVA) chapter of Virginia NORML—the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws—will hold its next monthly meeting on September 4 in the private meeting room of the Denny’s restaurant located at 8201 Sudley Rd, Manassas, VA 20109.

Guest speaker is Dr. Matthew Shifflett of Pure and Simple Family Chiropractic, who was arrested in June 2010, after police discovered a growing operation in the basement of his home. Hear his story, including how he was found guilty of manufacturing and the effect it has had on his life and family.  Libertarian Party candidate for U.S. Senate Robert Sarvis will share his campaign pledge to end cannabis prohibition in the United States.

“This meeting is an opportunity for us to engage more people in the western suburbs of DC who seek to become involved in marijuana law reform or are merely curious to see what it is all about”, according to Duane Ludwig, Communications Director for Virginia NORML. “Hearing how Matt has worked through the system and dealt with the effect on his reputation is critical to helping other Virginians see the effects of our antiquated marijuana laws.”

Past NOVA NORML meetings have been held in Arlington or Falls Church, but NoVA NORML is seeking to make this month’s gathering more accessible to supporters who live or work in the western suburbs of DC.  Meetings last from 8pm until 9:30pm, with time for socializing a half hour before and afterward.

According to a news release, NoVA NORML, one of many local chapters of Virginia NORML, educates and informs its members about many aspects of marijuana law reform by inviting a guest speaker to each meeting.  In addition, meetings provide an opportunity to plan events in the community, prepare for the annual Virginia NORML Cannabis Conference, and become engaged in efforts to advocate to the Virginia General Assembly for more reasonable laws concerning the cannabis plant and those who consume it responsibly.
