NOVA-Manassas presents discussion on Chinese culture March 23

On March 23 at 6:30 p.m., the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College will host “Chinese Culture and Growing Up in a Communist Country,” a presentation by Grace Yao and Dong Xiang. The event, which begins with light refreshments at 6 p.m., is free and open to the community.

Yao and Xiang will discuss the essence of Chinese culture and its traditional values, how the culture was nearly lost, and the unfolding of a renaissance of traditional Chinese culture.

After earning a doctoral degree in China, Yao has held several research positions at the National Institutes of Health and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. She is currently a staff scientist at NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Xiang is the executive director of New Tang Dynasty Television in Washington, D.C., an independent TV network that broadcasts uncensored Chinese programming into China and around the world. Xiang also serves as executive director of the Falun Dafa Association of D.C., which has presented the classical Chinese dance show Shen Yun at the Kennedy Center every year since 2007.

The event is sponsored by the Manassas Campus initiative called iCAD (Inspiring our Community to Academic achievements through Diverse experiences), spearheaded by Provost Roger Ramsammy. The program’s mission is to encourage people to pursue their educational goals.
