NOVA-Manassas initiative aims to put unemployed and underemployed adults in good jobs fast

Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College has developed a new initiative to help unemployed and underemployed adults quickly gain the training necessary to obtain well-paying jobs in the information technology (IT) field.

Called the IT Gateway Learning Community, the initiative offers several pathways to IT credentials. Short-term training can help people get into entry level jobs fast while longer degree programs teach the skills and knowledge employees need to advance their careers.

Interested adults can take an aptitude test to determine if the IT field would be a good match, and advisors will provide assistance every step of the way, from helping students select a program of study through applying for graduation. Several support services are included such as tutoring, resume writing, interview practice, job leads and more. Financial aid from scholarships and other funding might be available.

The IT Gateway Learning Community is part of NOVA’s Credentials to Careers, funded by a Department of Labor grant. NOVA received the grant to manage a national consortium of community colleges working together to develop new, employer-driven career pathways in STEM occupations. Locally, NOVA is partnering with nonprofit workforce development organizations and IT employers to provide education and training programs leading to IT credentials and careers. NOVA’s partners include the SkillSource Group Inc., Multivision Inc. and Northern Virginia Family Service’s Training Futures.
