NOVA Manassas dean tapped for National Hispanic Leadership Institute

Dr. Anitza San Miguel, a scientist and an interim associate dean at the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Community College, has been selected to participate in the National Hispana Leadership Institute’s ten-month Executive Leadership Program in 2014.

San Miguel is interim associate dean for the Science and Applied Technologies Division at the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College.

Manassas Provost Roger Ramsammy was quoted in the announcement as saying, “Dr. San Miguel is a gifted scientist who serves as a strong role model for other Latinas and we are delighted she has been named to this prestigious national leadership program. We are looking forward to having her share the knowledge and skills she learns with everyone at the Manassas Campus.”

For 26 years, the National Hispana Leadership Institute has fostered hundreds of Latina leaders through its award-winning Executive Leadership Program. This differs from other leadership programs by providing training and support through both a female and a Hispanic cultural lens. The program also promotes a heightened awareness of social responsibility and stronger attention to the needs of the broader Hispanic community.

The Executive Leadership Program spans 10 months and includes three components: training, mentorship and leadership projects.

The rigorous training curriculum consists of four one-week sessions to develop skills in cross-cultural communication, strategic management, public policy and leadership building.

For the mentorship component, participants commit to mentoring at least two other Latinas during the program year.

Additionally, participants will design an individual leadership project that significantly impacts the community and complete it before graduation.

Before becoming associate dean, San Miguel was assistant dean of science and assistant professor of biology at NOVA’s Manassas Campus.

Prior to NOVA, San Miguel worked at the National Institutes of Health. She also worked at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner. San Miguel has a doctorate in higher education from George Washington University, a master’s degree in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University, and a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Puerto Rico. She lives in Reston, a NOVA press release said.
