Music classes to be given in new formats at NOVA-Manassas

Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College is offering music classes in new formats during the fall 2016 semester.

“Music Appreciation” (MUS 121) covers Western music through the classical era, including the music of Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The course will also introduce students to music from India, Africa, the Middle East, Indonesia, China and Japan. “Music Appreciation” is a 16-week course scheduled for Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. starting Aug. 24.

“American Popular Music” (MUS 195) covers the evolution of popular music from 1950 to 2000, including rock, jazz, blues, R&B, soul, techno, pop, and music for film and theater. “American Popular Music” will meet for 14 weeks from 12:30 to 1:55 p.m. on Wednesdays starting Sept. 7.

“History of Jazz” (MUS 225) covers jazz from its birth through today. Styles include ragtime, Dixieland, big band, swing, bebop, fusion and jazz rock. “History of Jazz” is a 12-week course scheduled for Wednesdays from 4 to 5:55 p.m. beginning Sept. 21.

No prior music courses are required. The courses include lectures, musical examples and videos related to the subject.

Instructor Robert Raines earned a bachelor of music degree from Berklee College of Music where he studied jazz composition and performance. He also earned a master’s degree in music from Shenandoah University Conservatory of Music and a doctorate of music from Florida State University.

Online registration is open 24 hours a day at http://www.nvcc.edu and students must register by 11:59 p.m. the day before a session starts.
