Fraternity brothers and childhood friends of 70 years were among the hundreds of enthusiastic supporters, parents, students, School Board members, and dignitaries who paid tribute to Dr. George M. Hampton at the ribbon cutting ceremony held August 25.
The event formalized the rededication of the middle school at 14800 Darbydale Avenue in Dale City named for Dr. Hampton. The International Baccalaureate certified school was previously named Mills E. Godwin Middle School.
“We are building on the dedication of teachers and staff members who worked for years to shape the lives and learning of students here. They are now recommitting themselves to that vital mission,” said Superintendent of Schools Steve Walts.
“We are rededicating this school because we want to honor a man who has been a pillar of this community and who can be a role model for every single student who comes through our school doors. We know that every student…can look at George M. Hampton and say, “he would want me to be the best that I can be,” Walts said.
Hampton Middle School students are known as “the Huskies.”
