On March 11 at 9:45 a.m. the City of Manassas will participate in the Statewide Tornado Drill which is a joint effort of the National Weather Service and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. The drill will begin at 9:45 a.m. with a test tornado warning being sent by NOAA and NWS weather radios.
Tornadoes do happen in Virginia. In fact, according to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, in 2013 five tornadoes were recorded in Virginia and 11 tornadoes were recorded in 2012.
Do you know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning?
A tornado watch means that a tornado is possible in the area and residents shouldmonitor weather-alert radios and local TV stations for information.
A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted in the area or has been indicated by the National Weather Service Doppler radar and that residents should take cover immediately.
Tornadoes can strike anywhere at any time. Be prepared. Schools, governments, residents and families can participate in the drill by visiting http://www.readyvirginia.gov
