Manassas physician charged in narcotics case

On May 31, 2017, detectives from the Prince William-Manassas-Manassas Park Narcotics Task Force, with the assistance of the Virginia Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, concluded a narcotics investigation involving prescription fraud and the distribution of prescription pain medications with the execution of multiple search warrants at Sunnyview Neurology located at 8609 Sudley Rd in Manassas (20109) and at a residence located in Herndon, according to Manassas Senior Police Officer Charles Sharp, city police department spokesman.

This investigation was initiated by the regional task force in November of 2015. The investigation revealed that the physician at the practice, identified as Ishtiaq AHMAD, provided prescriptions and pain medications without properly performing the necessary medical exams.

Following the investigation and search warrants, the accused was arrested without incident.

At the beginning of the investigation, detectives provided an informational presentation regarding statutory requirements for prescribing controlled substances, as well as current methods and trends utilized by pill seekers, according to a news release. The information provided focused on tactics of deception, offenses of the Virginia Code, and additional information regarding addiction to prescription pills and heroin, the release said.

Throughout 2016, the investigation continued and Dr. Ahmad did not alter his practices, continuing to provide pain medications without properly performing the necessary medical exams, according to the news release.

The Manassas City – Manassas Park – and the Prince William County Police joint narcotics task force is committed to providing educational assistance on current trends with pill diversion to the prescribers of these medications and to patients. Any patient of Sunnyview Neurology wishing to speak to a detective is asked to call 703-686-6522.

The police departments’ goal through this educational assistance is to have prescribers and patients gain a better understanding of the behavior of addicts, learn more about the relationship between prescription pills and the current heroin epidemic, and further discuss the utilization of systems currently in place such as the prescription monitoring program, SPO Sharp said.
