Fraud
On March 29, 2016, Manassas City Police met with a resident for a report of a fraud. The reporting party, a 78-year-old female, told officers that a male subject had called her claiming to be her grandson. The caller told the victim he had been in a car accident in a foreign country, was in police custody, and needed money as a result. The caller said that if the resident did not send him money, he would have to stay in jail. The caller gave the victim a phone number to call someone who supposedly worked for the United States Embassy and could help. When the victim called him, the second suspect advised the victim that she would have to send a large sum of money in the form of prepaid cards before he could have her “grandson” released from custody. The victim complied until she was contacted by her bank who inquired about the purchases. She then contacted a family member who confirmed her grandson was safe in the United States and that the call was a scam.

The reporting party told officers that she was corresponding with an employer on a nanny website about a potential job when he sent her a check for a large sum of money. He told the resident that some of the money was for her, but since the alleged employer claimed to be out of the country, the majority was to send to another party to buy plane tickets.
