Manassas City Police Beat 1/17/12

Phone Scam
On Jan. 13, 2012, a citizen responded to the police department and advised officers that on Dec. 23, 2011, she was contacted by a male, identifying himself as Richard Green, advising her that she was the winner of a lottery containing a large amount of money. According to the victim, Green was very convincing, at one time even supplying her with sensitive information pertaining to her Visa card. Convinced that she had actually won the lottery, she turned over an undisclosed amount of money to Green. The victim then notified the police department once she realized that this was a scam. This investigation is ongoing.

If you are contacted by someone advising you that you have won money but you need to send them money first in order to collect your winnings, more than likely it is a scam. Contact your local police department before sending anyone money.
