In a series of four 2-hour classes starting April 28 participants can learn strategic ways to manage Type 2 diabetes. The program includes nutrition education, medication guidance and counseling on self-management. A Registered Dietitian, a Registered Nurse and retired Medical Doctor lead the program offered through Virginia Cooperative Extension.
A Certified Diabetes Educator will join the team for the diabetes medication class. A light meal is served at every class to demonstrate a diabetic-friendly dinner. After three months the class and alumni return to a follow-up to get their A1c checked.
The four week spring series begins on Thurs. April 28. It will be held at the McCoart Administration Center, 1 County Complex Court, Prince William, VA 22192. Cost is $50 for people with diabetes or $25 for a spouse or friend. If you are interested in registering to learn about healthy strategies for diabetes lifestyle management, call Nancy Stegon at (703-792-4764 for further information. Pre-registration required. Participants in the Living Well with Diabetes (LWwD) programs returning for the follow- ups in 2016 on average reduced their hemoglobin A1C values by 1 percent. This is a significant decrease which can result in fewer and less significant medical consequences such as blindness, kidney failure and neuropathy.
Weight loss is a pivotal piece in the puzzle of diabetes management, resulting in improved blood sugar control. Over 70% of participants in 2016 reported losing weight as a result of the program. At a three-month follow up class, one participant reported losing over thirty pounds since beginning the program. He attributes his weight loss to the program’s research-based nutrition education and self-management strategies including using a buddy system.
Enrollment is open to any individual with or without diabetes and their family members, caregivers or support persons. After completion of the program, participants remain an integral part of the Living Well with Diabetes community. Participants can opt in for regular healthy eating news updates from the R.D. and are also eligible for lifetime participation in the Living Well with Diabetes review courses.
