Little change in Washington metro area 2012 poverty, health insurance, income statistics

The U.S. Census Bureau reported Sept. 19 that the Washington, D.C., metro area’s median household income, poverty rate and uninsured rate are not statistically different from the year before. 

According to the 2012 American Community Survey, the median household income in the Washington metro area was $88,233 in 2012, which was not statistically different from $88,505 in 2011.

In addition, 8.4 percent of people in the Washington area were in poverty in 2012, which was not statistically different from 8.3 percent in 2011.

In 2012, 11.6 percent of the area’s population lacked health insurance coverage, unchanged from 2011.

Across all U.S. metro areas, median household income was $53,607 in 2012 (not statistically different from $53,545 in 2011), the poverty rate remained at 15.5 percent, and the uninsured rate decreased from 15.0 percent to 14.7 percent since 2011.
