The public is invited to attend a citizen’s information meeting from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on March 23 to get input and discuss the proposed widening of U.S. 1 between Featherstone Road and Marys Way. The meeting will be held at Potomac Community Library, 2201 Opitz Boulevard in Woodbridge.
During the meeting, the Prince William Department of Transportation will provide information on the proposed 1.3-mile project that would widen U.S. 1 to six lanes and includes adding one travel lane in each direction, right- and left-turn lanes, a multi-use trail and sidewalk, and providing related drainage, undergrounding of utilities and traffic signal improvements.
Construction on the $86-million project is scheduled to begin three years from now - in March 2019 - after the rights-of-way acquisition, environmental studies, design and utilities relocation phases of the project have been completed.
Money to pay for the project, that is scheduled to be completed by July 2021, will come from local, state and federal funding, said Rick Canizales, Prince William County Transportation Planning Division Chief.
The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority will contribute $54 million to the project. The county is expecting $11 million from the Virginia Department of Transportation as House Bill 22 passes the Virginia General Assembly. Another $21 million will come in federal money to complete the full funding of the project.
