Inclement weather policies for Prince William County Schools

When wintry weather is in the forecast, Price William County Schools reminds parents that it is important to listen to local media reports and to check the School Division’s Web and social media sites for any messages about changes in school or School Age Child Care (SACC) schedules.

No announcements will be made when schools and SACC are operating on a normal schedule.

Announcements of changes in school schedules are posted immediately after a decision is made on all School Division Web sites including pwcs.edu, facebook.com/PWCSNews, and twitter.com/pwcsnews, PWCS-TV (Comcast channel 18 and Verizon channel 36), and on the School Division’s telephone closing line, 703.791.2776.

Subscribers to E-News can choose to receive closing announcements by email, text message, or both. To register visit the School Division Web site (pwcs.edu) then click on “PWCS E-News” under “News & Updates.” Local media outlets are informed of schedule changes promptly, but may take time to update their information.

Principals have provided a letter to parents through school newsletters and Web sites with detailed information on closing procedures. 

Prince William County encompasses 348 square miles and stretches from the Potomac River to the Bull Run Mountains. Road conditions may change, vary from one end of the county to the other, or improve over time but decisions are made on a divisionwide basis for the safety of people across the county.

The decision to delay the opening of schools is made to allow commuter traffic to clear and hazardous road conditions to improve, or allow school officials to make a subsequent decision to close schools for the day. Early or full-day closing decisions may also be based on conditions in some parts of the county, though others may look very different.
