The section of Euclid Avenue between Manassas Drive and Liberia Avenue was once a choke point for traffic during morning and evening commute times, but it just got better. The two-lane stretch has been widened due to cooperation between a local developer and Prince William County government.
Rick Canizales, director of Prince William County Department of Transportation, said the developer of Walker Station widened that section of road as part of a proffer agreement. This saved the county the cost of the project. Proffers are voluntary concessions developers make to the community to offset any adverse effects their development might cause.
Improvements to Euclid Avenue included widening the road with an additional lane, dividing the roadway, and adding turn lanes into Osbourn Park High School and the office buildings in that area.
Coles District Supervisor Marty Nohe said the improvements to the road, which runs through Manassas, Manassas Park and Prince William County, were much needed and would provide congestion relief and increase safety for those who use the road on a daily basis.
Nohe was quoted as saying in a county press release, “Until very recently, (Euclid) was an hourglass road — a four-lane road in the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park that narrowed down to two lanes as it passed through Prince William County. This created a serious congestion point… By making these improvements to this relatively small section of Euclid Avenue, we can have a big impact on the people who use these roads every day.”
Nohe noted that this was one of many transportation projects happening around the county which will help make getting around the county easier and safer,
Nohe said. “Prince William County is very proud of our road construction program, which has allowed us to take the lead in building some major road improvements throughout the county, including the Prince William Parkway and the current widenings on Route 28 and Route 1. When you look at projects like this (Euclid), we can see major safety improvements and significant congestion relief that can come from relatively small investments.”
