Ice cream cones on June 18 to help family after accident

Every ice cream cone purchased from Effee’s Frozen Favorites on Thursday, June 18 represents hope and recovery for the Powell family. During the “Cones for Kelly & Carson” event from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., all ice cream cone proceeds will go to the Powell family, according to a news release.

Kelly and her 12-year-old son Carson were in a car crash on June 1, leaving Kelly in a coma and Carson—who has cerebral palsy—needing rehabilitation.

Ennis Electric Company, a locally owned electrical contractor specializing in commercial, institutional and industrial installation and renovation, is donating $500 to the family’s Go Fund Me page and participating in the event. Richard Ennis, Ennis Electric owner and board director, and his family will be at Effee’s at 7:30 p.m. to support the cause. Ennis Electric employees are also joining together to support the fundraiser.

“When our employees heard about the accident, they immediately started thinking about how we could help as a company,” said Kevin Cole, Ennis Electric executive vice president, who lives in western Prince William County. “When someone in our community needs support, it is up to us to make it happen—whether that includes running a 5K, making a donation, or buying an ice cream cone.”

According to the news release, Kelly, a special needs teacher at Centreville High School, remains in a coma with extensive brain trauma. Carson broke his leg and must go through physical therapy to learn to walk again.

Kelly and Carson were visiting Effee’s the day of their accident. The news release said the mother and son visited Effee’s nearly every week for the past decade—even as Carson went through numerous surgeries and learned to walk with his disease. Now, as the family struggles to recover, Effee’s and Effee’s patrons are coming together to support the family.
