The roar of bulldozers and other construction equipment filled the air moments before the Sept. 18 groundbreaking ceremony began for the new Kilby Elementary School on Horner Road. Under a tent where the future school’s administrative wing will be, Principal Amy Jordan welcomed dignitaries, including the school’s namesake, R. Dean Kilby, and his family.
Jordan, who once taught under Dean Kilby when he was principal at Rockledge, expressed gratitude to the officials who made the new building possible. “We are all excited and enthusiastic. The character and fabric of Kilby Elementary School’s community will continue to focus on high standards for student conduct and academics,” she said.
School Board Chairman At-Large Milton C. Johns and Superintendent Steven L. Walts praised Sigal Construction, the builder, and the PWCS Construction staff for their record of success in opening schools on time and within budget.
As mementos, officials gave Mr. Kilby Moseley Architect’s drawing of the new school and a small shovel used in the groundbreaking.
Music Teacher Merissa Driscoll and several of her students sang two school songs, with many students singing solo.
Other officials attending included School Board members Lillie Jessie (Occoquan) and Michael Otaigbe (Coles); County Supervisors Frank Principi (Woodbridge) and Martin Nohe (Coles), and Brianna Sewell, representing Congressman Gerry Connolly.
