Garage in Coles District catches on fire while family is away

On Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022 at 7:39 p.m. PW fire and rescue units were dispatched to a home in the 8000 block of Erika Drive in Coles District for a reported house fire.  Crews arrived with heavy fire and smoke showing from an attached garage. The occupants were not at home when the fire was discovered by neighbors.

Matt Smolsky, Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Marshal, said the garage sustained significant damage with the remaining portion of the home sustaining smoke damage. No injuries were reported.

The county’s Building Official posted the structure unsafe to occupy,  displacing two adults. The cause of the fire was attributed to wiring that was supplying lights, in the attic space above the garage, according the Fire Marshal’s Office.
