Fire destroys Gainesville barn filled with animals; all animals lost due to volume of fire

Earlier this morning, Sunday, May 8, at 3:39 AM Prince William fire & rescue units were dispatched to the 15000 block of Lee Highway (Gainesville) for a reported house fire by a passerby, according to Deputy Fire Chief Matt Smolsky.

Upon arrival, Smolsky said the crews encountered a barn located on the property that was fully involved in flames. Firefighters quickly determined there were animals inside but could not be saved due to the volume of fire. Smolsky said.

Reports indicate an estimated 500 chickens/ducks, four dogs, and three pigs were lost in the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Lee Highway was closed for approximately 30 minutes during firefighting operations. The structure was totally destroyed.

The Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the cause to be accidental, according to Deputy Chief Smolsky, who also serves as Fire Marshal for the county.
