With generally lighter summer traffic volumes, the Virginia Department of Transportation says it will allow some extended lane closures in off-peak directions on I-66 between Route 15 and Prince William Parkway for crews to more efficiently complete final paving on the I-66 widening project.
On eastbound I-66, motorists can expect alternating single-lane closures:
· Sundays-Thursdays, between 10 a.m. and 4 a.m. the following day
· There will be no eastbound closures on Fridays or Saturdays.
On westbound I-66, motorists can expect alternating single-lane closures:
· Sundays-Thursdays, between 9 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. the following day
· Fridays, between 9 p.m. and noon Saturday
Motorists should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes. VDOT will monitor traffic and make adjustments as necessary to ensure backups are not excessive in either direction.
The I-66 Widening Project will add one regular and one HOV lane in each direction from US 29 in Gainesville to US 15 in Haymarket. The $65 million project is scheduled for completion later this summer.
The adjacent I-66 and US 15 diverging-diamond interchange project is scheduled for completion in fall 2017. See update on this project in the Aug. 5 Bull Run Observer.
