This is just the second year Jim Gehlsen has placed his Evergreen Acres in the Wild Western Prince William County Farm Tour, but those who attend on Sept. 24 and 25 will come away with a great appreciation for the planning, methods and work put into managing a 97-acre property that yields high-quality Christmas trees, organic tomatoes and pumpkins, along with other plants.
Gehlsen is responsible for the daily labor on the seven separate fields at Evergreen Aces, but during the Farm Tour he will remain in the sales shed, which has tables and scales, greeting people and answering questions. He said last year about 250 people came each of the two days of the Farm Tour. He is hoping for even more this year.
“I will listen to what they are interested in and answer their questions,” Gehlsen said. “Somebody else will be driving the wagon for the hayride.” He is eager for visitors to understand this is a farm for the people. In addition to the hayride, they will have the opportunity to purchase cantaloupes, watermelons, organic tomatoes and five varieties of pumpkins and gourds, all grown on Evergreen Acres. There is ample parking from alongside the barn to the first field of trees.
