Virginia women in their junior or senior year in high school with at least a 2.5 grade point average are invited to submit an essay online and in English of 700-1000 words by 3 p.m. on Feb. 20, 2012.
The essay topic is the writer’s vision for a future STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) career and why she is considering the field for an area of study or possible career path. The winner will receive a $5000 college scholarship. There could be other winners, a news release said.
The winning essay will be selected and announced by a panel of judges who have degrees in or work in STEM fields.
Virginia Council on the Status of Women in collaboration with the Science Museum of Virginia is conducting the 2012 STEM Essay Contest. First Lady Maureen McDonnell is Honorary Chairwoman. Entries should follow the guidelines and be submitted through
