Dumfries school library to be named for Betty Covington

School Board Member Betty D. Covington (Potomac) has dedicated the greater part of her life to the children of Prince William County Public Schools and will be honored soon when the Dumfries Elementary School library is dedicated. The date has not been announced.

“Mrs. Covington is a part of the living history of Dumfries Elementary School. She has served the Dumfries Elementary School community in several capacities since the early 1960s and has spent countless hours looking out for students, families, and school staff,” said Marlene Coleman, principal.

Covington joined Prince William County Public Schools in 1961 as a teacher at Loch Lomond Elementary. She entered the halls of Dumfries Elementary School as a classroom teacher in 1962, and after nine years she became assistant principal at Dale City Elementary School. She returned to Dumfries Elementary School in 1997 and served as the principal until 2003.

Covington has been honored with numerous awards during her career, including Educator of the Year, Distinguished Woman of the Year, Star Award for Endless Dedication to Youth, and Human Rights Award.
She now is serving her third consecutive four-year term on the School Board as the Potomac District representative. She previously served on the Board from 1996 to 1997 and was elected in 2003, 2007, and 2011.
