On Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Manassas City Police will be joining the Prince William County Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to give the public yet another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
There will be two drop-off locations in Prince William County:
Novant Health Prince William Medical Center (8700 Sudley Rd, Manassas)
Sentara Lake Ridge (12825 Minnieville Rd, Lake Ridge)
Additional locations can be viewed on DEA’s Drug Disposal website. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
In addition to disposing old prescriptions properly at events such as the Drug Take-Back, consider the following safety tips for managing your prescriptions:
When storing your prescriptions at home, keep them in a cool, dry place where children, pets and visitors cannot have access to them. Don’t store your medicine where guests can easily see them.
Never broadcast the types of medicine that are prescribed to you, and be open to the fact in some cases even a member of your family or an employee may be the one trying to steal your medication.
Consider securing any narcotic medications such as oxycontin, vicodin or morphine in a locked or secure cabinet to reduce the possibility of theft.
If you must dispose of them from home, consider crushing the pills and throwing them away with coffee grounds or kitty litter.
Never leave empty prescription bottles in an open recycling bin to suggest there may be more inside.
