Dec. 21 last day Manassas National Battlefield Park will collect entrance fees

Beginning on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, the National Park Service will no longer be charging an entrance fee for visiting Manassas National Battlefield Park.

An assessment of the fee program earlier this year determined that collecting an entrance fee is no longer cost effective.

With a high cost of collection compared to the revenue raised from the fee program, park superintendent Jon G. James proposed to eliminate the fee at the end of the current year.

Although the park had announced in September that the effective date of this decision would be Jan. 1, 2016, the park will suspend collecting the entrance fee and the sale of passes after Monday, Dec. 21.

This will enable the park to complete any remaining administrative tasks associated with ending the program prior to Jan. 1, according to Ray Brown, Chief of Interpretation and Cultural Resources Management for MNBP.

In addition to the elimination of the entrance fees, Manassas will no longer be selling the Interagency Annual Pass or Senior Pass after Dec. 21.  These passes can be purchased at most federal recreation sites that collect entrance fees, or through the Federal Recreation Pass website at http://www.nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm  The .park will continue to distribute the Access, Military, and 4th grade passes to eligible visitors through Dec. 31.
