Shala Darwin, counselor at Vaughan Elementary School (VES), recently was named Counselor of the Year for 2010-11 school year by Prince William Regional Counselors Association (PWRCA). She was honored at the organization’s recent recognition banquet. Darwin noted she was “honored and humbled” to receive such an award. “I felt extremely proud,” she said.
Darwin said her favorite part of being a school counselor is working with the children. “I am a visionary, so I think beyond the here and now. I love being an advocate for our students and getting them to really think about their future and preparing them to be successful academically and in life.”
Since becoming a counselor at VES three years ago, Darwin has been instrumental in helping to coordinate and develop many of the programs at the school. One recent program that has been added to the VES list of opportunities is the “Kindergarten to College” program, which she chairs.
