The Board of County Supervisors (BOCS) has designated Wednesday, Feb. 14, as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Prince William County. This is a statewide observance sponsored by the Virginia Department of Transportation’s “Safe Routes to School” program, and a way of saying “thank you” to those who help students cross the street or streets safely on their way to and from school.
In Prince William, crossing guards are part of the county police department. According to Lieutenant A. Marie Snyder, section manager for Prince William crossing guards, “There is more to being a Crossing Guard than getting children across the street safely. Crossing Guards button coats, tie shoes and dry tears. However, most importantly, they welcome each child with a smile and a friendly greeting,” she explained.
Crossing Guard Appreciation Day honors the men and women who provide an invaluable service to our community, sometimes under challenging conditions in the performance of their duties. For more information on Crossing Guards, go to http://www.pwcgov.org/police .
