Long-time friends Betty DeVane Covington and John Harper, both of whom are former Prince William County School Board members, expressed thanks to the hundreds who filled the Covington-Harper Elementary School gymnasium August 24. The event marked the school’s official opening and paid tribute to these two legendary public servants.
Mrs. Covington served 54 years in Prince William County Public Schools as a teacher, administrator, and School Board member. Mr. Harper had a career as an U.S. Army officer, a second career in public service, and a third career as a senior statesman, advisor and mentor, and self-described pundit. Both were joined by School Board members, county and state elected officials, and students as they cut the shining ribbon bearing the school’s name.
Tributes and insights from speakers were spiced with humorous anecdotes and examples of the compassion and dedication of the honorees.
“It will be an honor to educate our students about the character, service, and accomplishments of our school namesakes,” said Principal Ron Whitten.
The ceremony opened with the Woodbridge High School Amy Junior Reserve Officers’ Corps Presentation of Colors.
