Manassas National Battlefield Park (MNBP) will conduct a scheduled burn between April 3-13.
According to the MNBP Superintendent, the planned fire will be adjacent to the eastern edge of the Brawner Farm area and will cover up to 45 acres of open fields and scrub.
This is the first prescribed fire at the park.
The timing is dependent on weather conditions being within required wind, temperature and relative humidity parameters.
Wildland fire engines, firefighters and mowed lines work collaboratively to create buffers and fire breaks to ensure the fire is contained. National Park Service staff will monitor air quality and smoke impacts, including visibility on nearby roads. Following the active burn, wildland firefighters will continue to patrol the area to ensure the fire is completely out.
The Superintendent also stated that the reasons for the burn are to restore historic battlefield viewsheds, to maintain wildlife habitat, and to control invasive species.
For those who use this section of the park, please note that there will be temporary closures of certain trails.
