Betty Covington “humbled” as Dumfries Elementary Library is named in her honor

Like a family reunion, the dedication of the Dumfries Elementary School library to long-time School Board member Betty D. Covington (Potomac) brought out former students, lifelong friends, a U.S.Congressman, and educators from across Prince William County.

Speaking for Dumfries Elementary School colleagues, reading teacher Marcia Brugger called Covington “the heart” of the school. Principal Marlene Coleman called her “an inspiring leader,” who is beloved by everyone who knows her. Music teacher Meredith Lopez led 30 students serenading Covington and the crowd with songs of celebration and jubilation.

Among many officials on hand, Congressman Gerald Connolly saluted Covington and presented her with a copy of The Congressional Record commending her 52 years serving Prince William County. Dumfries Mayor Gerald Foreman said Covington taught him much about the history of Dumfries when he took office. Others spoke of respect and admiration for Covington’s commitment to education throughout her years as a teacher, administrator, and School Board member.

School Board Chairman At-Large Milton C. Johns praised Covington for her “selfless devotion to children and tireless efforts toward all things that can make the community a safe environment for children.”

In attendance were staff from Kilby Elementary School, where Covington was principal for 19 years. The multipurpose room at that school is named for her. Covington taught at Dumfries for 11 years and later was principal for six years.

Covington was “honored and humbled” by the accolades from one and all. “This school and this community mean so much to me.”

Covington was especially pleased that the occasion gave the community an opportunity to see the result of renovations and facility upgrades of Dumfries Elementary, which opened in its current building in 1939.

“So many people were instrumental in making Dumfries Elementary a state-of-the-art school, yet saving its historic facade. I thank everyone who helped make that happen,” Covington said.

Among county officials who attended were School Board Vice Chairman Alyson Satterwhite (Gainesville) and School Board member Lillie Jessie (Occoquan); Board of County Supervisors Chairman At-Large Corey Stewart, Vice Chairman Maureen Caddigan (Potomac), and Supervisor John Jenkins (Neabsco); members of the Dumfries Police Department and Town Council, and Quantico councilwoman Earline Clinton.
