Carol Marchant, an education law attorney currently serving as assistant division counsel for Fairfax County Public Schools, will join the PWCS Office of Division Counsel as the assistant division counsel beginning July 1. Marchant brings 25 years of legal experience to her new role in PWCS, having worked in private practice and public schools as an education law attorney.
Marchant received her law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School. She clerked for the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and was subsequently employed in private practice in Minneapolis, and then with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Treasury before joining FCPS in 2003. Marchant is also an adjunct professor with the University of Virginia, Curry School of Education and George Mason University Graduate School of Education, where she teaches school law.
In her new role in PWCS, Marchant will join Division Counsel Mary McGowan to provide the School Board and its employees with legal support in many areas, including special education and disability law, student and employee civil rights, local governance issues, student discipline, procurement and contracts, torts and liability and employment law, according to a news release.
