High school and eighth-grade students looking for opportunities to build leadership skills will attend an upcoming conference designed to help them do just that.
The all-day conference is scheduled for Monday, March 9, at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on the Prince William Campus of George Mason University.
Up to 1,200 students who have been invited to attend exhibit leadership potential, achieve average to above average grades, are open to growth and learning, and are looking for opportunities to gain or enhance their leadership skills.
Session topics will address attitude development, communication skills, positive role modeling, personal responsibility, self-motivation, peer collaboration, self-accountability, action planning, and goal setting.
The presentations for the conference, “Igniting the Spark, Focusing the Flame,” include:
Greetings from the Honorable Gerald E. Connolly (11th District);
High school winner of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Oratorical Contest, Norman Jones, from Stonewall Jackson High School;
Interpretive presentation focusing on the theme of the conference and effective leadership traits by the Woodbridge High School Center for the Fine & Performing Arts;
Middle school winner of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Oratorical Contest, Zoree Jones, from Ronald Reagan Middle School.
Organizers for the 2016 Student Leadership Conference are seeking a student keynote speaker who can set the conference tone. Tryouts will be announced early fall 2015.
