PWC’s Mary G. Porter Traditional School gets “Blue Ribbon” honors from US Dept. of Education

Mary G. Porter Traditional School in Prince William County on Forest Grove Drive in Woodbridge is showing its Blue Ribbon designation. The school is one just seven Virginia public schools among the 325 schools nationwide that U.S. Department of Education has named a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School.The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors high performing schools and schools making exemplary progress toward closing achievement gaps.

In addition to Mary G. Porter Traditional School in Prince William, the other 2021 Blue Ribbon Schools in Virginia are

Sangster Elementary School in Fairfax County.
Windsor Oaks Elementary School in Virginia Beach.
Northern Shores Elementary School in Suffolk.
Greendale Elementary School in Washington County.
Meadows of Dan Elementary School in Patrick County.

Elydale Middle School in Lee County was the only middle school to earn Blue Ribbon honors.

National Blue Ribbon Schools are selected based on one of two criteria: performance on state assessments or progress over five years closing achievement gaps, according to a news release from the Va. Dept. of Education.

Mary G. Porter Traditional,, Elydale Middle, Greendale Elementary, Meadows of Dan Elementary and Sanger Elementary were recognized for overall achievement. Northern Shores Elementary and Windsor Oaks Elementary earned blue ribbons for progress toward closing achievement gaps.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona was quoted as saying in the news release,“This year’s cohort of honorees demonstrates what is possible when committed educators and school leaders create vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school cultures where rich teaching and learning can flourish.” I commend all our Blue Ribbon honorees for working to keep students healthy and safe while meeting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs.”
