Four lanes of Wellington Road between Godwin Drive and VA 28 in the City of Manassas, a distance of 4100 feet or about .77 mile, opened last week.
Manassas Mayor Hal Parrish gave a speech; then he, Manassas city council members Jonathan Way and Mark Wolfe, along with a host of other federal, state, local and private sector dignitaries cut the ribbon to open the road.
The $6.1 million project took 17 months. The roadway was designed by Whitman, Requardt, and Associates of Fairfax. Martin & Gass, Inc. of Alexandria constructed the road projct. A combination of local, state and federal tax dollars, including some from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 were used.
Mike Moon, director of public works and utilities for the City of Manassas, oversaw the project for the city. Moon said the road will help alleviate the increased traffic flow from continuing growth in Prince William County and from an increase in commuter volume to and from the Prince William campus of nearby George Mason University.
