Prince William County Police Department’s website: http://www.pwcgov.org/police now allows the public to file reports for certain types of non-emergency incidents that occurred within the department’s jurisdiction, according to a news release.
Any emergency should be called to 9-1-1. Online reporting is for residents18 and older for non-emergencies in the county (not Manassas or Manassas Park) and there is no known suspect. An e-mail address where information can be sent to you is needed. Police cautioned that filing a false police report is a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by confinement in jail for not more than 12 months, or a fine of not more than $2,500, or both.
The kinds of incidents that may be reported online include Harassing Calls, Texts & E-mails; Hit & Run with no personal injury; Larceny / Theft of property taken without permission, except stolen firearms or prescription drugs cannot be reported online; Larceny / Theft from Auto; Lost Property; and Vandalism or Vandalism to Auto. Online users can add information to a report previously filed online, over the telephone or given to a police officer.
Persons submitting online reports will receive email confirmation, a temporary report number and a printable copy of the temporary police report. The Police Department may contact people who file online reports if more information is needed.
Police Chief Charlie T. Deane called online crime reporting “a significant step in efficiency” that will give county police officers “more time for investigations and
other duties.”
