Farming is a family affair for the Yankeys of Nokesville. Parents Jim and Elaine have passed on their invaluable knowledge to son Jay, who’s been sharing fresh finds with the community for years.
The Yankey family owns about 18 acres around the area. Their two farm stands, at 13007 Vint Hill Road and at 14841 Glenkirk Road, are familiar sights – and stops – for locals and visitors in the spring, summer and fall. The Vint Hill road stand opened seven years ago. The Glenkirk Road stand opened 14 years ago.
Yankey Farms has been a part of the Wild Western Prince William County Farm Tour for 10 years. The Yankeys consider the tour the kick off for their fall season. During the tour, the Vint Hill stand will offer educational displays on fruit and vegetable farming and irrigation equipment. Gourds, corn stalks and straw bales will be on sale.
A three-acre pumpkin patch will offer orange treasures of all sizes. A corn maze and kettle cow train will delight little ones while regional beekeepers will be abuzz with the latest news on hives. And of course, fruits and vegetables will be for sale. A picnic area will be available as well. Antique tractors restored by Jim Yankey and his friends will be on display. The Vint Hill stand will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25.
